On Tuesday we hiked 2 miles in to to the first "beach" on the 11 mile Hanakapiai trail that winds along the cliffs of the Napali Coast. This root structure is just one of the surfaces of a trail that was made long ago by some of the first occupants of the island.
It was a very windy day.

A lot of the trail is muddy, rocky and all washed out.
The "beach" we did all the hiking for. We had envisioned a white pristine beach and instead came to a rocky one. A sign at the beach stated to "stay away from the water. Invisible currents have taken 82 lives here." We asked a local later that day if that was true and they said it sure was.

A little rat crossed our paths on the trail. He didn't mind when we got in really close to take a picture of him.

It was a good hike. We hiked 2 miles in and 2 miles out. The length of the entire trail is 11 miles so we got a small taste of it.
